Sometimes the best escapes are closer than you think. Just two hours from Los Angeles and a short drive from Santa Barbara, the Santa Ynez Valley offers rolling vineyards, historic charm, and an inviting sense of California ease. This past May, our advisor Danielle discovered just how restorative a long weekend here can be with a stay at the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern, Auberge Resorts Collection.

Arrival in Wine Country

Leaving the bustle of Los Angeles behind, Danielle’s group set out on the scenic drive north. Within a couple of hours, they arrived in Los Olivos, a charming town at the heart of Santa Ynez wine country. After checking into Mattei’s Tavern, a historic inn first opened in 1886 and now beautifully reimagined by Auberge Resorts, they explored the local tasting rooms before enjoying dinner at Bar Le Cote, where coastal California flavors meet Mediterranean inspiration.

Slow Mornings, Sunny Afternoons

Saturday unfolded in the relaxed rhythm of wine country living. Danielle started the day with yoga on the inn’s lawn, followed by a friendly game of pickleball and a leisurely morning by the pool. With warm California sunshine overhead, the group enjoyed a casual lunch from The Shed, the poolside restaurant. Danielle’s recommendation? The kale salad to order— crisp, refreshing, and perfectly balanced for a midday bite.

In the afternoon, she explored the valley’s unique wine culture. The first stop was Solminer Wine Co., a small Los Olivos tasting room celebrated for its natural wines. Produced using regenerative organic farming practices, Solminer’s wines are deeply connected to the land, reflecting both sustainability and artistry in every glass.

From there, Danielle visited Andrew Murray Vineyards, where Rhône varietals like Syrah and Grenache highlight the terroir of the valley. Together, these tastings captured the breadth of Santa Ynez winemaking — from innovative natural wines to classic Rhône expressions.

That evening, Danielle returned to Mattei’s Tavern for dinner at The Tavern, where the menu’s elevated ranch-style dishes showcased ingredients sourced directly from the property’s garden and surrounding farms.

Exploring Santa Ynez

Before heading home, Danielle enjoyed breakfast at Felix & Seed and took time to explore more of the valley. A scenic hike through Lover’s Loop revealed wildflowers in bloom, while nearby farms offered fresh strawberries and local produce. To round out the weekend, the group wandered through Santa Ynez town, browsing artisan shops and vintage finds before returning to Los Angeles.

Why Mattei’s Tavern Makes the Perfect LA Getaway

For Danielle, what made this trip special was not only the beauty of the setting but also the ease of the journey. In just a couple of hours, she went from city streets to vineyard views. Auberge’s thoughtful touches made the experience feel personal and unforgettable.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic retreat, a family getaway, or a wine country weekend with friends, Mattei’s Tavern delivers the ideal blend of luxury and local culture, just a short drive from LA or Santa Barbara.
