April 17, 2025 6:52 pm By Callan Falkenstein, Manager of Leisure Sales
South Africa had been on my bucket list for years, and this trip exceeded every expectation. From vibrant city life in Cape Town to the jaw-dropping beauty of the Winelands and the pure magic of safari, every stop felt like a dream. If you're planning a trip to South Africa, here's the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
My Itinerary at a Glance:
- 4 Nights in Cape Town – Vibrant city life, ocean views, adventure.
- 3 Nights in the Winelands – Stunning vineyards, charming towns, world-class wine.
- 6 Nights on Safari – Up-close wildlife encounters, luxury lodges, unforgettable experiences
Cape Town: City Vibes with a Side of Adventure
Cape Town, one of the most breathtaking destinations in the world, instantly stole my heart with its blend of city life, ocean views, and adventure. There’s something about the mix of city energy, ocean air, and the towering presence of Table Mountain that makes it one of the most dynamic places I’ve visited.
Where to Stay:
- The Silo Hotel – If you want to kick off your trip with luxury and city views, this is the place. Each sunset from the rooftop bar felt like a painting, as the sky turned shades of pink and gold over Table Mountain. Located right on the V&A Waterfront, The Silo is known for its incredible architecture, chic rooms, and a rooftop bar that serves the best cocktails with panoramic views of the city.
- Ellerman House – If ocean views and relaxation are more your speed, Ellerman House in Clifton is perfection. The staff makes you feel like royalty, and the caviar and bubbles pairing (yes, South Africans call champagne "bubbles") on the patio, paired with live music, is an absolute must.
What to Do:
- Visit Boulders Beach – Hanging out with the adorable penguins on the beach is an experience you won’t forget.
- Paraglide off Lion’s Head – The most breathtaking way to take in the Cape Town coastline.
- Oranjezicht City Farm Market – A weekend must! Grab a cup of the best coffee, sample local bites, and browse handmade goods while enjoying prime people-watching
- Hike Table Mountain – Pro Tip: The hike is not for beginners! Start early to avoid heat and crowds, and take the cable car down to shorten the hike. If you're looking for a more intermediate hike, Lion’s Head is your best bet!
Where to Eat:
- Kloof Street House – A magical dinner spot tucked away in a lush garden. This is the "IT" spot to be seen in CT.
- FYN – An elevated fine dining experience that blends Japanese and South African flavors beautifully.
The Winelands: Straight Out of a Fairytale
I’ve been fortunate to travel to some incredible places, but Franschhoek, often called the food and wine capital of South Africa, is next-level stunning. Vineyards stretch endlessly across rolling hills, historic Cape Dutch buildings line the streets, and every meal is a work of art.
Where to Stay:
- La Residence – Heaven. On. Earth. Each room is uniquely decorated with handpicked art and furniture from around the world, and peacocks casually roam the property. If I could live in a hotel, it would be this one.
- 7Koppies – A secluded farmhouse escape with breathtaking views. The highlight? A home-cooked dinner that feels like the ultimate comfort meal after days of travel.
What to Do:
- Winery Hopping – Don’t miss La Motte, Leeu Estates, Babylonstoren, and Delaire Graff Estate.
- Explore the Town of Franschhoek – A charming, storybook-perfect village full of great shops and cafes.
- Stellenbosch – A lively university town with great restaurants and even better wine.
Where to Eat:
- La Petite Colombe – A 7-course tasting menu that is pure artistry. If food could be classified as fine art, this place would be a museum.
Safari: The Most Magical Experience of All
There’s nothing that can prepare you for the feeling of being on safari. Imagine sipping your morning coffee as a herd of elephants stops by your private pool for a drink—pure magic.
What a Day on Safari Looks Like:
- 5:00 AM: Your ranger wakes you up with a cheerful call.
- 5:30 AM: Quick coffee and light bites before heading out for the morning game drive.
- 7:30 AM: Stop in the bush to stretch your legs and enjoy your morning coffee with Amarula (a creamy liqueur made from marula fruit—try it in coffee with cocoa!)
- 10:00 AM: Return to the lodge for breakfast and relaxation—book a massage, nap, or lounge by the pool (keep an eye out for wildlife!).
- 4:00 PM: Afternoon game drive to discover what the bush has in store.
- 7:00 PM: Sundowners by the fire pit, swapping stories about the day’s sightings.
- 8:00 PM: A delicious, open-air dinner under the stars.
Where to Stay:
- Phinda Vlei Lodge – A total highlight. The staff made us feel like family—Tasha checked in daily to make sure we had everything we needed. Happiness (yes, that’s her name!) greeted us every morning with the warmest smile and a steaming cup of Amarula coffee, setting the tone for another magical day in the bush. Our ranger Vic was a walking encyclopedia of the wild. Phinda’s private reserve is home to the Big Five, and we saw them all in just two game drives!
- Ngala Tented Camp – A luxury tented experience with phenomenal game viewing. Think five-star amenities but in the heart of the bush. Oh, I forgot to mention... you get your own personal butler at each safari camp. Talk about service!
Final Thoughts: &Beyond blew me away with their hospitality. Every single team member made us feel so welcomed, and their warmth and attention to detail elevated our safari experience beyond anything I could have imagined. If you’re considering a safari, DO IT. It’s worth every penny and then some.
Final Tips for South Africa:
- The exchange rate is in your favor – Take advantage of amazing food and experiences at a fraction of the cost you’d pay elsewhere.
- Tipping is customary – About 10-15% in restaurants and for guides.
- Cape Town is WINDY – Pack accordingly.
- Safari is chilly in the mornings and hot during the day – Layers are key.
- Try everything! – From biltong (South African jerky) to braai (BBQ), the food is out of this world.
South Africa was everything I dreamed it would be and more. Whether you’re exploring Cape Town’s vibrant markets, tasting wine in Franschhoek, or watching a leopard stalk its prey on safari, it’s a trip that stays with you forever. If you’re thinking about planning your own South African adventure, we’d love to help craft your perfect itinerary!
